Have you been a little more sluggish at work than usual? Could be your diet.
According to Food and Mood author Elizabeth Somer, R.D., our ability to excel is directly linked to the contents of our shopping cart. Hint: the most successful people in the world don’t get ahead by eating a cheeseburger and fries every day!
Turns out that the food we eat have a profound impact on our energy levels, productivity, and focus. In fact, research released by the World Health Organisation revealed that the right foods can increase brainpower, motivation, and productivity by up to 20%. Pretty impressive, right?
Thing is, there is an enormous amount of information out there about the foods that are best for your body. The so called super foods, also known as brain foods, are nutrient generators that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals - which we all need when life is overflowing with stress and deadlines. It’s crucial to go into challenging situations fuelled by foods that allow you to perform at your best. So yes, eating the right foods determine how successful you are and will be – in both business and in everyday life.
You probably already know that you should be eating your greens, but if you’ve decided to ignore the hype you could be missing out on brain power. Brain-wise it’s packed with vitamins and minerals - especially vitamin K which is known to enhance cognitive function – also, the iron content improves learning, memory, and attention. Leafy greens include kale, spinach, and broccoli.
Did you know that 60% of your brain is made up of fatty acids, and salmon is packed with the best kind - DHA - to maintain memory, build focus and support reasoning? Not a fan of fish? Go nuts for nuts, especially walnuts. They don’t look surprisingly similar to the brain for nothing! They contain 15-20% protein, Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, and Vitamin B6. This brain lookalike will improve cognitive function as well as your overall health.
Also, coffee lovers rejoice! Yes it does make you feel more awake and yes it does help you to concentrate. Don’t forget the dark chocolate. Seriously, can this list get any better?! Dark chocolate contain antioxidant properties that help with focus and concentration.
Don’t forget about the wholegrains. Wholegrain breads and cereals contain a higher percentage of folate than other carb options. Folate boosts blood flow to the brain, keeping it at peak levels throughout the day. A wholemeal breakfast (something like oatmeal, bran cereal or whole-wheat toast) will increase your thinking power and will prolong your energy, mood, and concentration levels.
Raise the bar by including even more super foods such as blueberries, strawberries, avocados, eggs, bananas and tomatoes, into your diet. It might seem like a simple adjustment, but it might just be the lift your body is looking for to stay focused and motivated.
